Retro-fitting petrol cars with electric powertrains is nothing new. Stellantis – parent company of Peugeot, Citroen, Fiat and others – has done it for years, while the likes of MINI and BMW will offer you countless flavours of their wide-ranging ICE and EV line-up. So in theory, Ford has every reason to pin its hopes on the latest Puma Gen-E, a zero- emissions take on one of our favourite small SUVs, and the UK’s best-selling car in 2024.

The Citroen Holidays is a welcome new entrant into the manufacturer-converted compact-camper market, even if it does appear more like a third-party conversion than its closest rivals. The hard plastics and cheap-feeling trim are reflective of its lower price, but that may mean it stands up to the rigours of vanlife better than the more premium-feeling Volkswagen California. The Volvo EX90 can now be ordered with a Single Motor powertrain, boosting efficiency and lowering the car’s starting price. This, in conjunction with the model’s new ‘Plus’ trim level, brings the electric SUV’s entry price to £82,660 – £13,700 less than the existing Twin Motor Ultra. The Single Motor version swaps out the flagship car’s two motors for one rear-mounted unit producing 275bhp and 490Nm of torque.

The second-generation Volvo XC60 has been the Swedish brand’s best-selling model ever since it was introduced in 2017, and the mid-size SUV is sure to retain that title thanks to a new more sophisticated look, bigger touchscreen and much slicker tech. It’s on sale now, priced from £48,410. That starting price means the facelifted XC60 undercuts the new BMW X3 and Audi Q5, which cost from £50,165 and £51,410 respectively.

Less than three weeks since Smart revealed all the facts and figures for its biggest car yet, the covers have come off the Smart #5 Brabus – the brand’s fastest and most powerful model to date. Based on the same platform and 800v architecture, it turns the #5 recipe up to 11. The Smart #5 Brabus uses an identical 100kWh (94kWh usable) battery as the #5 Premium, but it’s linked to an uprated dual-motor powertrain producing a combined 637bhp.
