Four new school boardmembers were sworn into the Evanston/Skokie School District 65 Board of Education at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting and will immediately face a financial crisis. The new members, Patricia Anderson, Nichole Pinkard, Maria Opdycke and Andrew Wymer, replace more than half of the outgoing board. The previous four members declined to run for re-election after a turbulent pair of years that saw the district plummet into a financial deficit.

A 57-year-old Evanston man is being charged with two felony first degree attempted murder charges after shooting at two of his family members on Greenwood Street near Hartrey Avenue, Evanston police said, adding that no injuries were reported. Police said John Ross Sr. of the 2300 block of Greenwood Street, Evanston, shot at two of his family members, ages 34 and 48, on May 3.

An Evanston firefighter was being treated for heat exhaustion at a local hospital following a fire at a home on Monday, according to a news release from the Evanston Fire Department. The family living in the home has been displaced and is being assisted with shelter by the American Red Cross. Firefighters were dispatched to a home in the 1900 block of Warren Street on Monday around 11 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and active fire conditions.

Skokie’s top attorney was recognized for his 13 years of service as the village’s Corporation Counsel at the May 5 Board of Trustees meeting. At the meeting, Cook County Commissioner Josina Morita (13th), Illinois House Rep. Kevin Olickal (16th), Illinois Senators Ram Villivalam (8th) and Laura Fine (9th) spoke highly of Michael Lorge’s service to Skokie and his influence in the Chicago area.

A new business hub featuring businesses focusing on Black-owned and/or wellness businesses opened in Evanston at 2223 Washington Street on May 10. Named The Aux, the hub will be able to house up to 12 businesses at its building when fully occupied. The Aux so far hosts a Wintrust Bank kiosk, a community kitchen, a gym, a laundromat/cafe, a podcast studio, a hair salon, a doula office, a startup office and open spaces for socializing and community.
