What we think of as “reference” has steadily evolved with technology. There was a time was when “reference” referred, as it were, to books and other printed materials. But as new media appeared, reference adapted.

In recent years, librarians have found themselves caught in the crossfire of what the Washington Postcalls a “culture war in the stacks,” as book-banning and other challenges to intellectual freedom become more widespread and dangerous. The American Library Association terms the current book-banning campaigns an “unprecedented threat of censorship.” Concurrently (and predictably), initiatives around equity, diversity, and inclusion have also come under fire.

THE QUABBIN RESERVOIR, the main drinking water source for the city of Boston and for 2.5 million people in 40 cities and towns across Massachusetts, is under threat. Quabbin is at risk of toxic pollution by a landfill proposed for Hardwick, a small town in central Massachusetts. Holding roughly 400 billion gallons of drinking water, Quabbin is an environmental and economic treasure.
