In July 1769, the first published image of William Shakespeare’s birthplace appeared in Gentleman’s Magazine. Based on a watercolour drawing made seven years earlier by the antiquary Richard Greene, it depicted a detached, three-gabled building with dormer windows. The caption underneath read, ‘A House in Stratford upon Avon, in which the famous Poet Shakspear was born’. An impressive abode, especially for the family of a town glovemaker like John Shakespeare.
