These are routinely accompanied by dire warnings about the anticipated long-term economic and societal consequences of too few babies. The main worries are a depleted workforce, reduced consumer spending, inadequate care for the elderly and declining tax revenues. Even nations at odds with each other are united in decrying this current trend.

Male fetuses and adult sons of women who smoke while pregnant exhibit more changes in gene expression than females. Researchers at the University of Aberdeen conducted two studies – they analysed livers of fetuses from women who had elective pregnancy terminations, and they also investigated the longer-term effects of maternal smoking using data from the UK Biobank.

The current government has often expressed its support for the concept of tonnage tax, especially following Brexit, and has appreciated the benefits the system brings to the UK’s shipping cluster. The announcements in the recent budget were as welcome for repeating that message of support as for the positive changes made.
