Annabelle Selldorf's practice will create a five-year masterplan for the museum’s Grade II-listed Hertford House base on Manchester Square. The job comes soon after the practice completed the controversial revamp of Venturi, Scott Brown’s 1991 National Gallery’s Sainsbury Wing. The Wallace Collection comprises 5,500 objects, including medieval and Renaissance works of art and princely arms and armour.

Chris Fellner, director, Haworth TompkinsOverall, it’s positive the government has recognised that small and medium sized sites are particularly difficult to develop if they have to fulfil the same onerous planning requirements and go through the same planning process as major developments. So, removing some of these requirements, while still retaining an appropriate level of quality control, is a good step forward.

News of the appointment comes just days after The Crown Estate snapped up a 50 per cent stake in the Lendlease-backed oversite development sitting above a new high-speed rail (HS2) station and an upgraded Network Rail station. Allies and Morrison replaces Prior + Partners on the long-awaited and hugely complex project, which will now be delivered by the King’s property company working in a joint venture with the Australian developer giant.

More specifically: ‘unviable’ – it seems almost all the project on the nation’s drawing boards are set to stay there until the finances stack up; and ‘unlocked’ – as in ‘the government must cut us some slack and do X, Y and Z if they want us to build out of our shovel-ready pipeline of housing schemes.

The jury described the former Stirling Prize-winner’s part re-use, part new-build Young’s Court development as ‘a model for how to conserve and enhance a historic place for future generations’. Shortlisted from 23 projects, the 14 schemes taking home 2025 RIBA East Awards also include a major research centre for AstraZeneca by Herzog & de Meuron and BDP and a ‘joyful’ seaside affordable business and community complex in Essex by HAT Projects.
