    The public has been invited to view each of the five shortlisted design concepts for the national memorial following the launch of an online exhibition today (7 May). The winner in the contest organised by Malcolm Reading Consultants, will create a ‘historic’ memorial to the UK’s longest-serving monarch on the site next to Buckingham Palace in London’s St James’s Park.

    The plans for site owner Reselton Properties were approved by Richmond Council in 2023,  subject to sign-off from London’s mayor. It was the fourth application submitted by the developer to be approved by the council. But mayor Sadiq Khan challenged the 7.5 per cent level of affordable housing in the 1,075-home Thameside proposal in south-west London. The Greater London Authority (GLA) claimed the development team had failed to prove the maximum viable amount of sub-market-value residences.

    They are joined by New York and Madrid-based Office for Political Innovation and Spanish/US outfit Ecosistema Urbano on the shortlist in the international architecture competition to create a ‘new world wonder’. The two-stage contest, with a prize pool of €250,000 (£213,000), is backed by Dutch social enterprise Shift, which is ‘dedicated to igniting massive climate action’. Heatherwick and Ecosistema Urbano were both pre-selected ahead of an open call in January, which attracted 80 submissions.

    The appointment to restore architect Edward William Mountford’s Renaissance Revival-style landmark follows a competitive selection process led by Sheffield City Council.​According to the council, the ‘transformative’ project aims to ‘breathe new life into the historic building, ensuring its long-term sustainability and continued role as a central hub for civic life in Sheffield’. FCBS has growing ties with Sheffield.
