The first incredible images of the sun's south pole have been sent back to Earth by a spacecraft. The photos and video were taken by the European Space Agency's Solar Orbiter spacecraft, and are the first ever captured of the area. They'll enable scientists to learn how the sun's cycles between periods of raging storms and quiet times, which affect satellite communication and power grids on Earth. The new images reveal a bright atmosphere which can reach one million degrees.

A Queensland university has signed an agreement pledging to repay thousands of underpaid staff more than $8 million. Griffith University underpaid 5457 full-time, part-time and casual staff working from all its six campuses, dating back to 2015. Academics, fitness employees and support staff were impacted.Individual underpayments ranged from less than $1 to more than $92,400, including superannuation and interest.

Police are investigating the discovery of two dead people in a granny flat on Sydney's Northern Beaches overnight. Officers attended a home on Cannons Parade in Forestville shortly before 9.30pm yesterday after concerns were raised for the welfare of the occupants. Following a search, the bodies were found in a granny flat at the rear of the property. The bodies are yet to be formally identified. Police established a crime scene and launched an investigation.

Ten years after arriving in Australia, many refugees previously working as managers and professionals are today struggling to find jobs in those areas, new research says. A report from the federal government's Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS) released today shows many refugees are experiencing "occupational downgrade". Both male and female refugees found it tough going to have their skills and qualifications recognised by employers.

Qantas today announced it was closing the group's Singapore-based budget airline Jetstar Asia as it moves to strengthen its core business in Australia and New Zealand. The decision will free $500 million for Qantas Group to invest in its fleet renewal plans. Around 500 lobs will be lost from the Asia region. Qantas says that 13 Jetstar Asia Airbus A320 aircraft will be progressively redeployed to Australia and New Zealand, bringing more low fares and local jobs.
