In 2019 Ncuti Gatwa was in the States promoting brand new comedy Sex Education ahead of its debut; then, he was a relatively unknown actor who had appeared in a couple of BBC sitcoms. The Netflix show, where he was playing the gay British-Nigerian teenager Eric Effiong, was released as he was boarding a flight back to the UK. By the time it had landed, his Instagram following shot from 500 to 700,000 and he could no longer go to his beloved Tesco without getting bombarded by fans.
