An event that bills itself as the fastest party on the planet, the New Balance Outdoor Nationals got underway in Philadelphia on Thursday with two Riverside High School athletes among the competitors. Thrower Cianna Groom and high jumper Jada Ward will represent the Warriors at the championships taking place at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. The event runs through Sunday.

SOUTH CHARLESTON — A lack of numbered jerseys made it hard to tell some players apart, but the scoreboard told enough of the story on Friday’s North-South All-Star girls basketball game at South Charleston Community Center. South surrendered a 14-point lead, only to rally in the second half behind the hot shooting of Mingo Central guard Addie Smith, who pushed the Cardinals in the second half to an 80-76 win over the North Bears. kAmq@E9 E62>D A=2J65 :?

Jason Nichols, head coach of the South Cardinals All-Star football team, recognized a hole in the team’s defense left by some of the invited players who had backed out of the annual game at South Charleston. So, Nichols turned to Herbert Hoover’s Talon Harrison, who the coach said was a player he knew to have a nose for the football, to fill in as a safety for the South in Saturday’s 29-22 victory by the Cardinals over the North Bears.
