New artificial turf placed on the infield and outfield of Sam Carpenter Field was a great gift for Capital coach Steven Lewis, but it’s had an unintended consequence. It left the Cougars spoiled, he cracked. “These guys, they’ve got it good,” Lewis said on Tuesday after Capital’s 10th home game of the season against Hurricane.

SPRING VALLEY — If speed kills, it was downright deadly for Spring Valley on Thursday in a 9-6 Mountain State Athletic Conference softball win over St. Albans at the Wolves Den. The Timberwolves’ speed on the base paths led to eight stolen bases, while on defense they easily tracked down fly balls to get outs, as well as balls hit into gaps to limit potential extra-base hits to singles.

Hurricane’s trip to Capital for a high school baseball game Tuesday didn’t start well, but it left Sam Carpenter Field at Cougars Stadium with a 21-2 win in five innings. Hurricane didn’t have a hit against Cougars starting pitcher Grant Barclay until the fourth inning, when Hurricane broke the game open with 17 runs on eight hits, including a three-run triple by Bryce Shirkey. “It was a good ball game until that one inning,” Hurricane coach Brian Sutphin said.

SPRING VALLEY — St. Albans pitcher Bryce Eggleton pitched well enough to get the win over Spring Valley on Tuesday, April 8, but the Timberwolves’ Garrett Wagoner was just better. Wagoner pitched a no-hitter while striking out 14 batters to help Spring Valley earn a 4-0 victory at Timberwolves Field. Wagoner allowed only four runners to reach base, with two walks and two Spring Valley errors. kAm%96 %:>36CH@=G6D :>AC@G65 E@ h\a @? E96 D62D@?]k^AmkAmt88=6E@?

NITRO — Nitro Little League baseball player Brady Ullman likely wasn’t ready for a quiz on Saturday, April 5 when he arrived at the city’s park and Ivan D. Meadows Complex for the opening ceremony of the 2025 season. However, a quiz was what Ullman got from George Foster, a former Cincinnati Reds outfielder and a member of the Reds Hall of Fame, when the youngster showed up wearing a replica road jersey from Cincinnati’s most dominant years that bore Foster’s No. 15.
