I’m old enough to remember when hundreds of thousands of Buicks, Mercurys, Oldsmobiles, Plymouths and Pontiacs rolled off the assembly lines every year in Flint, Dearborn, Lansing, Detroit and Pontiac, the respective hometowns of these storied brands. The problem is that too many other people, including influential policymakers, also wistfully recall those days and somehow believe they can be resurrected.

Michigan posted the largest unemployment rate jump among the 50 states over the past 12 months, the Detroit News recently reported, citing federal Bureau of Labor Statistics data. The state’s jobless rate rose 1.4 percentage points between February 2024 and last February, the latest month available.

President Donald Trump backed off threats to slap 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico starting Tuesday, saying the two countries had agreed to measures designed to address the flow of the deadly drugs and unauthorized immigrants into the United States. Trump paused the tariffs for 30 days, giving a reprieve to Michigan’s auto and agricultural industries that were expected to take direct blows from the tariffs.
