BayCare on Thursday said it secured a “final key piece” in its development as an academic health system through a new collaboration with Chicago’s Northwestern Medicine. The partnership, which includes Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, gives BayCare expanded access to treatments, enhanced clinical research, and improved training and education for current and future physicians,” according to a news release.

Lee Health's new Fort Myers facility is getting an additional $150.5 million to add a four-story patient tower that will increase planned bed capacity as well as a child care center for employees. The new investment, approved four months after construction began, will increase capacity by 92 beds, including 48 acute care beds, 20 skilled nursing beds and shelled space for an additional 24 acute care beds.

The University of South Florida will be searching for a new athletics director after Michael Kelly parts ways to tackle a new journey. According to a university release, Kelly is leaving to take the same role with the United States Naval Academy. He begins his new position on June 23. In the meantime, USF President Rhea Law asked Jay Stroman to tentatively serve in Kelly's place as the interim vice president for athletics.

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday signed a health care-related bill that extends for two years the protections against discrimination based on a person’s mRNA vaccination status. The bill (HB 1299) keeps the legal definition of mRNA — the main type of COVID-19 vaccine — and prohibits government agencies, certain businesses, and schools from discriminating against people based on their vaccination status.

The late Amir Abdur-Rahim and Jim Leavitt, head coaches with different but enduring legacies at the University of South Florida, headline the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame selections for 2025. The hall’s 11thclass, announced Monday, also includes football’s Kawaika Mitchell, baseball’s Scott Hemond and basketball’s Kitija Laksa.
