    Late developments in this campaign season remind us of the often-attributed Mark Twain saying, “A lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth can get its shoes on.” We want to set the record straight and address falsehoods swirling around about Alaska’s oil taxes. In 2014, we joined more than 500 Alaskan businesses and leaders throughout the state to oppose a ballot measure that would have reversed Alaska’s current oil tax structure (Senate Bill 21).

    Ensuring that our kids have safe schools with an adequate learning environment should not be a political or partisan issue. That is why we, as former mayors, are coming together to urge Anchorage voters to support the school bond in this year’s municipal election. Up to 10,000 students from Chugiak to South Anchorage could see funding for critical projects like roof repairs, secure entry vestibules, seismic safety and planning for future projects in this year’s $62 million bond.

    Having served two terms as Anchorage’s mayor, I know the work it takes to strive to make Anchorage a safer, cleaner city with excellent recreational, educational, and employment opportunities — in other words, a more livable city. It’s not easy. No mayor can reach that perfection in just six years. But a good mayor can accomplish some of those goals and put the city on a path toward achieving all of them.
