Sincerest apologies to anyone who missed my earlier, equally sincere apologies. When I published last week’s mailbag, I somehow clicked on (or Substack somehow defaulted me to) the setting that closes comments, so for almost an hour after the piece ran, comments were locked. Bad way to introduce a new feature that depends on comments! Fortunately (?) I’ll be neurotic to a fault going forward about making sure the correct box is checked, and hopefully that’ll allow more of you to ask questions.

Unlike many news organizations, the Prospect has remained staunchly committed to keeping our journalism free and accessible to all. We believe that independent journalism is crucial for a functioning democracy—but quality reporting comes at a cost. From Trump’s threat to the free press to Musk’s influence on our democracy, there is too much at stake in 2025 to stop now.

In December of 2019, as House Democrats were drawing up articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, I was again introduced to the viewers of Fareed Zakaria GPS on CNN: “This is a historic moment. "@elonmusk, look at this person you killed, doesn't it make you sad?" "No. I'm a Nazi. The first things I destroyed were the agencies that help Black Africa. And the only refugees my boss likes are afrikaners."

@elonmusk Let me try to change your mind: Meet Evan Anzoo. He was a five-year-old boy infected with HIV at birth, and USAID kept him strong with 12-cent-a-day medicines. The, @elonmusk, you fed USAID "into the wood chipper," as you put it, and without medication he died. No regrets? https://t.co/RfpWuaOkLV

RT @joshtpm: Amazing the tears and whining in this thread. Yes, when Democrats are back in power there will be accountability for the braze…
