The weather has been holding steady…almost a full week of spring-like weather. Fishing activity in the region is responding to water temperatures. As water temperatures rise, so does the feeding activity of fish. Are you ready? The Tri-county Canal system east of town, has a bit more walleye action below checks on the canal. There is some crappie action at Jeffery Lake off the points in the lower part of the main lake. I also have reports of walleyes biting at the inlet of Johnson Lake.

I had a reader send me a picture of a snake that he found in his driveway. After the initial shock, he correctly identified it as a bull snake. However, he did question the shape of its head. The head had definite characteristics of a snake from the pit viper family. Within the grouping of snakes known as “pit vipers” are rattlesnakes, water moccasins and copperheads, all of which have been found in Nebraska. Bull snakes are not poisonous and will try to avoid humans if they can.

It is May in Nebraska and the weather is starting to warm up. That means anglers are thinking about fishing, turkey hunter have until the end of the month to fill their permits and a lot of people are thinking about camping. Camping season is upon us! As soon graduations are done and school is out for the summer, the camping season will kick into high gear. It is a fun time of the year. Camping always has new gear to talk about…tents, cooking gear, lightweight sleeping bags, etc.

Water temperature makes a big difference in spring fishing. We still have some cool nights and an occasional rain and that can have an impact on water temperatures. Each species of fish has a favored temperature for certain activities and anglers can capitalize on this fact if they know what to look for. If you have a temperature gauge on your boat or in your tackle box, here is a quick reference guide for some of the more common species in Nebraska. Carry this bit of information with you.

I started out the spring turkey season in a turkey camp for some other outdoor writers from around the country. The goal was to have them get a gobbler out here on the prairie. We were hunting some canyons and open fields within some wildlife management areas in southwest Nebraska. The hunt took place in a rather remote area for Nebraska. Joe Arterburn owns and operates Arterburn Outdoors, and he hosted the camp.
