Recently I had the opportunity to preview a handful of upcoming titles at Summer Game Fest. These ranged from ones I’d been laser focused on since their announcement and some that had been revealed for the first time less than 24 hours before my appointed time. The bulk of these affirmed my assumptions, maybe taught me something new, and left me curious about what publishers might showcase next. Then there was Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, which shocked me by becoming my favorite game of the show.

In what might be the coldest take of the summer, I’m here to remind you that Mario Kart 8 is nothing short of a landmark title for Nintendo. The number one seller across two consoles and widely hailed as the pinnacle of the series when it comes to sheer scale and quality, following this one up (even as it just passed its 11th birthday) was always going to be tough. Smartly, Nintendo didn’t quite try and beat itself at its own game with Mario Kart World.

Donkey Kong Bananza is looking to reinvent gaming’s greatest gorilla. That fresh perspective on DK and the subterranean world he’s smashing through made it unclear how much of his familiar cast would be a part of the adventure.

Look, I have been playing Mario Party for a long time. Longer than nearly any other game series I keep up with. We all know the pain of stars being stolen or a poorly rolled dice block. Yet for some reason, even when Luigi wins by doing absolutely nothing, its particular brand of randomness has never really struck me as unfair. Lego Party got dangerously close to that point when I got a full board in at Summer Game Fest.
