TOKYO -- Toyota Motor, Nissan Motor and other companies will invest a total of 1 trillion yen ($7 billion) to expand Japanese production capacity for storage batteries by around 50% with government support, Nikkei has learned. The investments, which will go mainly toward automotive batteries, would lift capacity to 120 gigawatt-hours from 80 GWh.

TOKYO -- Japanese chipmaker Rapidus plans to use robots and artificial intelligence to fully automate production at a chip fabrication facility being built in northern Japan, a move meant to slash delivery times compared with rivals, President Atsuyoshi Koike told Nikkei. Rapidus -- Japan's new government-backed hope for regaining its edge in chipmaking -- broke ground on the facility in Hokkaido last September.
