William Morton golf team goes worst to first

William Morton Collegiate is the Zone 7 golf champion. The four-man squad is heading off to provincials after having the lowest combined score at their zone tournament last week. Team member Drake Starr says the event was held in Neepawa. "It's a pretty tough track. We just played really good golf. All the boys that I went out with played really well. I was actually surprised because they're used to the Gladstone course, where it's wide open," Starr continues.

The Winnipeg Rifles may not have had the result they wanted last week, but one individual made his presence felt. Portage's own Kyler Banfield was named the Prairie Football Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week as he had three special teams tackles and a blocked punt. "Jordy, our head coach, kept saying over and over that we were going to get a blocked punt on these guys. Apparently, the Rifles haven't had a blocked punt in three years," Banfield explains.
Terry Fox Run returning to Portage

The second Sunday of September is just hours away, and that means one annual event is around the corner. Portage's Terry Fox Run goes down tomorrow at 10 a.m. and starts at Island Park. Run coordinator Todd Cuddington says last year's event went swimmingly. "We had about 65 participants last year that ran, and our shirt sales were really positive. The Portage Terriers wrapped up the home portion of the preseason in style. The Dogs came from behind to pick up a 4-3 victory over the Neepawa Titans tonight. The Terriers' guns were blazing from the opening puck drop. It took the squad just 35 seconds to get the fans cheering. Gabriel Laflamme entered the offensive zone with a burst of speed. He cut through the slot and fired a shot that was stopped, but the rebound was for the taking on the doorstep.

The MJHL's top-scoring defenceman from the 2022-23 season is on the move. Hayden Lacquette is heading to the Waywayseecappo Wolverines in a trade that sees the Portage Terriers acquire forward Parker Korman and future considerations. Tyler Cote, Michelle Nostedt, and their kids, Adele and Bernard, have donated $5,000 to start a new fund for the nursery school through the Community Foundation of Portage & District. A young Portage la Prairie product travelled across the world to compete against some of the best hockey players in his age group. 10-year-old Jack Klippenstein represented his country in Tampere, Finland this summer at the Eurofest Tournament. He says the style of play was a little different than he expected. "The games were rough. There was a lot of body-checking."
