It is June. The NFL is about to go (mostly) on hiatus for about two months, surfacing for an OTA here or a signing there. The Cowboys have signed every member of their rookie class except for defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku. They have nearly $32 million in cap space. They also have a $24 million cap hit on Micah Parsons’ fifth-year option before they extend him, which means they could theoretically create even more cap space rather easily when they extend the star rusher.

Were you to ask ChatGPT to create a player to plug the gaping hole that was the Cowboys’ No. 2 receiver, it probably would create Miles Austin, because AI is trash and it knows that Austin was a Cowboys receiver once upon a time. But if you gave it enough knowledge of Dallas’ current offense to make an actually informed decision, and you didn’t give it any of the extenuating circumstances as to why George Pickens was available, it would draw up someone extremely like George Pickens.

The Cowboys have made it no secret that they want to run the football more often and better next season. They showed that by selecting Tyler Booker with the 12th pick in the draft, rebuffing trade offers from the Houston Texans to move down. And they followed up in the fifth round by adding home-run hitter Jaydon Blue, who Will McClay called an explosive playmaker, to the backfield mix.

To head this off at the pass, I don’t think acquiring Joe Milton changes much about the Cowboys’ trajectory. In ideal circumstances, he won’t start any games in 2025. He can’t make the offensive line or front seven work better. He’s not going to make the reclamation projects on defense work out. But I think he’s an interesting stab at a backup quarterback, and I can’t complain about the price.

We’re nearing the three-week mark of NFL free agency, and here is where the Cowboys stand:•The only major free agent they’ve been tied to is Cooper Kupp. Upon hearing Kupp’s asking price, the Cowboys (per DLLS’ Clarence Hill) immediately decide they wouldn’t be able to reach an agreement on a contract. •They have $38 million in cap space per Over The Cap, tied for the 10th-most in the league.
