Once the Spartans got going, though, they never let up in their WPIAL Class 2A boys basketball preliminary round playoff game at West Greene. Brentwood stormed back from an early 11-2 deficit to knock off the 14th-seeded Pioneers in coach Jim Romanus’ final game, 69-59, to advance to Monday’s quarterfinals at No. 3 Jeannette.

    Josh Mick was 3 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs as Mapletown closed its baseball season with a 13-3, five-inning victory over visiting Turkeyfoot Valley in a non-section game. Freshman Sam Moritz allowed just one hit with two walks and four strikeouts in four innings to earn the win for the Maples (3-14). Zach Ryan had two hits and two RBIs for Turkeyfoot (2-15) which also got a hit, RBI and run from Luke Bowers. Heath Nicholson took the loss.

    Wyatt Nehls slugged a pair of home runs and Austin Grego fired a four-hit shutout as Uniontown completed a two-game sweep of crosstown rival Laurel Highlands at Bailey Park in Section 2-AAAA baseball action on Tuesday. The playoff-bound Red Raiders (5-5, 6-7) finish the section in a tie with Ringgold, whom they also swept, for third place. Nehls hit a two-run homer and a solo shot in driving in three runs and Hunter Smitley also homered and scored twice for Uniontown.
