IWC has produced a three-hand automatic version of its Colours of Top Gun Pilot’s watch in its Mojave Desert ceramic. The sand colour has been a surprise hit for the brand since being used for a Big Pilot Perpetual Calendar and Chronograph. This time in its simplest form, the 41mm x 11.7mm watch has the familiar dark brown dial with paler brown hour markers, minute track and Super-LumiNova-filled hands.

My favourite watch in a meagre ‘collection’ is a Zenith Respirator from 1969. There is a family story behind it, which adds to its personal value to me, but it is also a quality timekeeper. A few years’ ago, a bunch of us watch journalists at a press event were all invited to test the accuracy of whatever we were wearing that day on a timegrapher. The United States imported Swiss watches worth a staggering CHF 852 million in April as manufacturers raced to shift stock into the country before the imposition of new tariffs that might be as high as 31%. Time+Tide opened its first Studio in its home city of Melbourne in 2023 as a clubhouse and retail showroom that brought together a community of watch enthusiasts and mainly independent brands. A second Studio opened in London last year. In addition to its main purpose as a multibrand retail store, it has become a hub for live events, product launches, collector meet-ups.

2024 was challenging for many of the biggest watchmakers in Switzerland as customers converged on banker brands — Rolex, Cartier, Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe — while most saw double-digit declines in sales. The independent sector, ranging from kitchen table microbrand start-ups to decades-old Swiss privateers selling six-figure timepieces, was not immune to a cooling of the market from its post-pandemic highs, but appear to have fared better than their more industrialised peers.
