    I read somewhere recently that the second Friday of January is unofficially some sort of “break your New Year Resolution” day. Like I said, it’s unofficial and whenever anyone tells you that “I read somewhere,” proceed with caution. So, cautiously, I wish you all Happy New Year and, as for those resolutions that I hope you still are keeping, I offer a page of advice. Let me start by offering this — early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and moisturize. The days are getting longer, bit by bit.

    My wife loves to talk to strangers. When we are on vacation, I can be comfortably parked in a poolside lawn chair gathering more than my fair share of sunshine and suddenly get a sense that something is missing. That’s when I’ll look around and see her engrossed in a conversation with someone that I know she’s never met. Quite often it’s more than one “someone” or on various occasions an entire group of strangers.
