In doing so, they further consolidated their second place in the table over their third placed visitors. Josh Canning’s side played against the strong wind in the first half and were quickly put under pressure inside their own 22. However, the defence held and they gradually worked their way upfield to open the scoring after 15 minutes.

BURNTWOOD scored 22 points in each half to win 44-13 away at Willenhall – and for a change it was the back division who contributed all the points. The hosts had achieved a bonus point in all of their previous games this season and looked to be on course to continue that run by taking an eight point lead in eight minutes. But Josh Canning’s side responded with three tries in each half to halt the run.

BURNTWOOD made it eight wins from eight matches to stay second in the table – although Spartans had opportunities late in the game to halt the run. Josh Canning’s side made a bright start to the contest, helped by the hosts knocking the ball on receiving the kick off. Billy Fisher and Brett Taylor paved the way for Luke Rookyard to dummy his way over under the posts for a try converted by Taylor for a seven point lead after just two minutes.

The result means they remain in second place behind Sutton Coldfield going into the first break weekend of the season. They were well ahead by the hour mark before Shrewsbury mounted a comeback – but two converted tries in the last two minutes confirmed a deserved win. The first three possessions by the visitors ended in turnovers.

The hosts had a last gasp penalty chance of their own to take the win, but the kick from the halfway line fell just short of the posts.

BURNTWOOD made it five wins from five games as they overcame a tough test against a youthful Wolverhampton side. The result sees Josh Canning’s men stay second in the table. For the first time since the opening day of the season, it was The Sportsway side who scored first. Canning’s line out possession on the home 22 was moved wide. Luke Rookyard had the defence retreating before Billy Fisher burst through to the line for an unconverted try after three minutes.

BURNTWOOD survived a late scare to record a narrow victory at Trentham. After an hour of the entertaining contest, Josh Canning’s side had a 12 point lead before the hosts narrowed the gap and saw a late penalty attempt fall just short to prevent them claiming a cup scalp. Trentham, the current Owen Cup holders, may play one league below Burntwood but they made a fast start to the game andseized on a handling error in their own 22 to break away for an excellent try under the posts.

BURNTWOOD were narrowly beaten three times by Newcastle last season but took the honours in a tight encounter this time. The 23-21 triumph means Josh Canning’s side have now made it four wins from their opening four games of the season. Newcastle did have a chance to take the win with the last kick of the game, but a penalty attempt slid across the face of goal much to the relief of the home support.
