Although it’s the shortest month of the year, many singers and writers whose talents we’ve enjoyed in cabaret and theatre were born in February — all the way up to what is the last day of the month (except in leap years). Bernadette Peters, Brent Barrett, William Finn, and Tommy Tune all will be celebrating their birthdays on February 28. Last year’s February Birthday Salute was dedicated to the elegant lady who defined the art of intimate cabaret: Mabel Mercer.

Life may be unpredictable and some may still agree with Benjamin Franklin’s statement that “Nothing is certain, except death and taxes,” but I’ve found that there have been a few things we can rely on being true, year after year:1–Winter weather will end, although maybe not when the forecaster (the groundhog) indicates. 2–You can learn a lot about life from a Broadway musical. 3–-What matters is not where you start; it’s where you finish.

Just after the lights dimmed and the entertainer’s name was announced (“Birdland is proud to present…”), the respectful, anticipatory silence in the hushed room was broken by someone piping up, in a strong tone of voice: “I want the waiter with the water!” It wasn’t a belligerent customer demanding service (the wait staff at the venue are notably attentive and had made their rounds).

At 54 Below on January 12, strikingly strong vocal lines seemingly poured out of Linda Eder in a manner that could also describe the easy, matter-of-fact, professional way the wait staff had in smoothly refilling the customers’ water glasses. Both kept at it without a drop of trouble. If skill, musical chops, and charm were measured in fluid ounces, this star has it in gallons. I’ll drink to that!Having been in her audiences before and knowing her recordings, of course, I was not surprised.

On Sunday, January 12, Dizzy’s Club was selling drinks and food and, of course, seats for singer Catherine Russell and pianist Sean Mason's 9:30 pm show. But you know what Russell and Mason were selling? Joy! Their upbeat repertoire, performance energy, and chemistry together all radiated happiness, serving delight through music.
