A former cabinet minister will join activists today to demand that the government uses its Employment Rights Bill to outlaw the abusive use of non-disclosure agreements. Labour MP Louise Haigh, who resigned as transport secretary in November, will join campaigners this afternoon to deliver a petition to 10 Downing Street calling for a ban on the misuse of NDAs in cases of workplace harassment, discrimination and abuse.

The backlog of open cases at employment tribunals has continued to rise, hitting 49,800 at the end of 2024, a 23% increase on 39,000 cases that existed a year earlier, according to quarterly statistics from HM Courts and Tribunals Service. The tribunal backlog means approximately 450,000 individuals, across single and multiple claims, are now waiting for their cases to be resolved.

Peers have criticised the number of amendments that the government is making to the Employment Rights Bill, as they debated the legislation in the House of Lords, with one describing it as a ‘patchwork quilt we are getting as we go along’. With the Employment Rights Bill now at committee stage in the upper house, peers have tabled their own amendments but yesterday attacked the uncertainty of numerous provisions and ministers’ late amendments.

The UK’s first transgender judge is appealing this month’s landmark ruling by the Supreme Court at the European Court of Human Rights. On 16 April, five judges unanimously ruled that sex for the purposes of the Equality Act 2010 means biological sex, prompting celebrations for women’s rights campaigners and distress for the trans rights lobby.

Marks & Spencer unfairly dismissed a bakery worker because of her pregnancy, an employment tribunal has ruled. Mrs Kayahan Kolan won her claims of automatic unfair dismissal and pregnancy and maternity discrimination from an M&S store in Watford. She began her brief employment with the retailer on 15 October 2023, having agreed at interview that she would not have to lift anything heavier than 5kg because of a problem she had with her back.
