    Poundland plans to close 68 stores and two warehouses as part of a turnaround strategy, with reports estimating that between 1,000 and 2,000 jobs are at risk. The budget chain, which was sold by Pepco to US retail investment firm Gordon Brothers for a nominal sum last week, has nearly 800 shops and employs approximately 16,000 people in the UK and Ireland. A digital and frozen distribution centre near Barnsley and another warehouse near Wolverhampton are set to close amid the restructuring plan.

    A finance worker who falsified timesheets when working from home has lost her claim for unfair dismissal from a university students’ union. In one instance where she had claimed to have worked five hours, IT records showed that she logged in for just 11 minutes. Employment Judge Hallen found that the students’ union had conducted a reasonable investigative and disciplinary procedure and that its decision to dismiss was within the range of reasonable responses open to a reasonable employer.

    The equality regulator has defended its interim update on the practical implications of the Supreme Court’s ruling on the definition of sex, saying it was a matter of balancing ‘clarity and speed’. Speaking to the Women and Equalities Committee of MPs this week, Baroness Kishwar Falkner, chairwoman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, emphasised that the update was not guidance, as some of the MPs questioning her and EHRC chief executive John Kirkpatrick had referred to it, but an update.

    The availability of candidates in the labour market has risen at its fastest pace for four and half years, amid reports of redundancies and fewer job opportunities. According to the Report on Jobs survey from KPMG and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) for May 2025, UK recruitment activity recorded a further reduction. Permanent placements fell at a slightly sharper rate, but the decline in temporary billings was the slowest in six months.

    The Equality Act is contributing to a ‘divided Britain’, according to research which reveals increasing numbers of unsuccessful employment tribunal claims for race discrimination. Researchers from the social cohesion campaign group Don’t Divide Us found that between 2017 and 2024, there were 5,523 tribunals that included a discrimination claim based on the protected characteristic of race – tripling over the period.
