JOLIET — It hasn’t been the greatest of times for Joliet West to start the season. But, after an 0-8 start, the Tigers (2-8, 1-0) picked up their second straight win Tuesday, opening up Southwest Prairie Conference play with a 19-1 win over Joliet Central in three innings. Junior Ella Featherston was one of many Tigers to enjoy a big day at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a grand slam, a double and three runs scored.

NEW LENOX — The top two softball teams in Class 4A in the latest Illinois Coaches’ Association poll, Marist and Lincoln-Way Central, respectively, met Monday afternoon in a rematch of last season’s Class 4A supersectional at Rosemont. Marist won that matchup and went on to finish second in the state. The Knights (9-0) picked up a bit of revenge Monday, recording a 3-2 win over the Red Hawks when Ellie McLaughlin walked with the bases loaded, forcing in Ava Quinlan with the winning run.

PLAINFIELD — Like any pitcher, Plainfield South‘s Regina Glover was quick to give credit to her defense after Thursday’s 9-3 win over Coal City. Glover had good reason to praise the players behind her in the field, as the Cougars turned in several defensive gems en route to the victory. Third baseman Katie Beu was particularly magnificent with her glove, snaring three line drives and turning one of those into a double play.

NEW LENOX — It’s pretty common in just about every sport. In baseball, pitchers want to be hitters and hitters want to be pitchers. In football, running backs want to be linebackers and defensive backs want to be receivers. In volleyball, back row players usually want a chance to shine in the front row. Lincoln-Way West sophomore Colin Baikie got his chance Wednesday night against Providence Catholic.

JOLIET — Just a few days ago - Thursday of last week, to be exact - Minooka collected 11 hits against Joliet Catholic Academy in the WJOL Softball Tournament. The trouble for the Indians was they were only able to score one run in the loss. That wasn’t the case Tuesday when the teams met again. Minooka rapped out 15 hits and made better use of them in a 10-9 victory that saw the potential tying run for JCA thrown out trying to score to end the game.
