Happy Pride Month, everyone! Just a quick update today. Poland: In a stunning upset, the conservative won yesterday’s presidential election 51-49. This development likely scuppers all the remaining promise of Prime Minister Tusk’s reform agenda, including repairing the judiciary from a decade of cronyism under the Law & Justice party, and legalizing abortion, civil unions, and banning hate speech. I wrote up the Los AngelesBlade’s 8th Annual Best of LGBTQ+ LA Awards. Congratulations to all the winners!Lithuania: Lawmakers are still trying to figure out how to respond to the constitutional court’s decision allowing same-sex couples to register their relationships. The Prime Minister says it will bring forward legislation to codify this, perhaps in the autumn session, in order to give all parties time to come to consensus on the issue.

Courts deliver big wins for LGBTQ families in Italy and Mexico

Italy: The constitutional court ruled that the government must list both mothers on the birth certificate of a child born to a lesbian couple. The far-right national government had begun challenging birth certificates issued to children of lesbian couples by left-leaning cities, leading to this fight. The court found the government’s policies violated the constitutional rights of both the couples and the children.
Mexico Supreme Court expands conversion therapy protections

Mexico: The Supreme Court invalidated a part of Guerrero state’s conversion therapy ban which provides exceptions for parents who put their children in conversion therapy. Of the 19 states with a conversion therapy law, it was the only one with such an exception. Legislators in Tabasco state decriminalized abortion last week, becoming the 24th state to do so. Conservative legislators in Morelos and Guanajuato have been blocking decriminalization bills from receiving a vote.

ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map has some headscratching findings

IGLA-Europe released its annual “Rainbow Map” module tracking LGBT rights progress across the continent yesterday, along with a press release that paints a worsening forecast for queer rights across the continent. I’ve been critical of this module in the past, so I’ll start with a compliment this time. The idea to allow users to track the module by category and issue, with different maps for each one, is a great step to improve transparency in how ILGA is rating the countries.
