MATTOON — Don Imeri knew he wanted to become an entrepreneur after growing up working at his parents' restaurant and brother's auto sales lot in Mattoon. "I wanted to do something I could call my own," Imeri said. "I wanted to do something I like that I can wake up in the morning and enjoy doing."That goal of combining business and fun led Imeri and his wife, Merita, to open their Sweet Scoops Ice Cream Parlor on Monday in a former coffee shop building at 601 DeWitt Ave. in Mattoon.

MATTOON — When vocalist Raven Rogers was invited to sing on Thursday at Lake Land College's Juneteenth celebration, she quickly selected her original song "Moving On" for this performance. The Altamont resident, who is nontraditional student at Lake Land, said she wrote "Moving On" in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic as an inspirational anthem for those facing tough times in their lives.

MATTOON — The history of Metzger Family Farms stretches back nearly seven decades to James and Evelyn Metzger founding this beef cattle operation in 1956 in rural Charleston. Stan Metzger said he and his family are continuing his parents' legacy of raising "farm to fork premium beef" while always seeking new opportunities, such as partnering in the farm-to-table dinner that will be held Wednesday, June 25, and Thursday, June 26, at the Alamo Steakhouse & Saloon in Mattoon.
