The waiting game ended when the regular season began for three Saskatchewan Roughriders players. Punter Joe Couch and offensive lineman Daniel Johnson, both of whom spent the 2024 campaign on the practice roster, were in the opening-day lineup when the Ottawa REDBLACKS visited Mosaic Stadium on Thursday night. Patience also paid off for fullback Morgen Runge, who made a long-awaited CFL debut after attending Coors Light Training Camp in 2023, 2024 and 2025.

It must have been an exhausting Thursday night for the great Greg Mayer and his sterling staff. The Saskatchewan Roughriders registered their fifth consecutive season-opening victory, but not without some tense moments — outlasting the Ottawa REDBLACKS 31-26 at Mosaic Stadium on Thursday. The Roughriders led 31-14 before Ottawa scored all 12 fourth-quarter points. “It wasn’t pretty,” Head Coach Corey Mace said, “but it was a win.”Saskatchewan got two touchdown passes from Trevor Harris, who hit Samuel Emilus and Thomas Bertrand-Hudon for majors. Emilus caught eight passes for 133 yards.
