1 INTRODUCTION In the coniferous forests of the northern hemisphere, some of the most destructive forest pathogens are in the genus Heterobasidion, which cause a root and butt rot (Garbelotto & Gonthier, 2013). Within this genus, H. irregulare causes damage on pine species (Pinus spp.) in both eastern and western North America (Otrosina & Garbelotto, 2010). However, H. irregulare has also been associated with other conifers and less frequently on hardwoods (Sinclair, 1964).
