DENVER – A suicide five years ago in the Saguache County jail has led to a jury verdict in a lawsuit against jail staff that awarded $4 million to the estate of the victim. The verdict came April 9 at U.S. District Court for Colorado in Denver in the trial for Sarah Lieberenz's lawsuit as the representative of the estate of her son, Jackson Maes. He was a detainee who hung himself in his cell in 2019.

DENVER – A trial began March 31 against Saguache County jail staff and others for alleged negligence in the way they handled a pretrial detainee before he committed suicide in 2019 in his cell. The trial is in Denver in the U.S. District Court for Colorado, where Sarah Lieberenz, mother of detainee Jackson Maes, sued. The lawsuit alleges that jail staff disregarded comments Maes allegedly made about intending to commit suicide and failed to check on him after he was brought in under arrest.

Court records show that the minimum penalty is 15 years in prison.

DENVER – Barry Morphew is not giving up on his claim that investigators and prosecutors violated his constitutional rights as they pursued a case against him for allegedly murdering his wife, Suzanne. He is appealing a decision last month in which a judge threw out Morphew's lawsuit against those law enforcement officials. On Oct. 24 in Denver at the U.S. District Court for Colorado, his attorneys filed a one-sentence notice of an appeal.

DENVER — A U.S. District Court judge Sept. 24 threw out Barry Morphew's lawsuit against investigators and prosecutors who charged him in 2021 with murdering his wife Suzanne. Judge Daniel D. Domenico of the U.S. District Court for Colorado issued his 33-page decision in which he said that some law enforcement authorities mishandled their criminal case against Morphew. He said Morphew, "like anyone accused of a crime, deserves better than what happened here.

DENVER – Attorneys for the investigators and prosecutors who put together the unsuccessful murder case against Barry Morphew told a judge Aug. 21 why he should throw out Morphew's lawsuit against the officials. The attorneys made their arguments for 2½ hours during a hearing in Denver at the U.S. District Court for Colorado. That is where Morphew is suing Chaffee County government, the sheriff and deputies, the district attorney and others who developed the case against him.
