The verdict came April 9 at U.S. District Court for Colorado in Denver in the trial for Sarah Lieberenz's lawsuit as the representative of the estate of her son, Jackson Maes. He was a detainee who hung himself in his cell in 2019.

    DENVER – A trial began March 31 against Saguache County jail staff and others for alleged negligence in the way they handled a pretrial detainee before he committed suicide in 2019 in his cell. The trial is in Denver in the U.S. District Court for Colorado, where Sarah Lieberenz, mother of detainee Jackson Maes, sued. The lawsuit alleges that jail staff disregarded comments Maes allegedly made about intending to commit suicide and failed to check on him after he was brought in under arrest.

Avery Pierce, 28, entered the plea at the U.S. District Court in Denver in a deal with the U.S. Attorney's Office. He is to be sentenced on July 10. Court records show that the minimum penalty is 15 years in prison.

    DENVER – In a dispute over religious rights, a judge ruled on Monday in favor of a Christian preschool in Buena Vista and against a state agency that oversees a state preschool program. The dispute led the Darren Patterson Christian Academy to sue the agency, known as the Colorado Department of Early Childhood, in 2023 in Denver at the U.S. District Court for Colorado. The lawsuit alleged state education officials were discriminating against the preschool due to its religious beliefs.
