I used to go bird watching when I was young but I haven’t done it in a long time. I was thinking of getting back in to it. I thought I’d just discuss some of the birds I’ve watched over the years as some of you might like to take it up too. It can be a very rewarding hobby. I love watching tits through binoculars while hiding in the woods. There aren’t any tits where I live in Australia, though. I’ve only been able to see tits when travelling overseas. I think the tits in mainland Europe look great.

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Chicago and McGill University found that Queens Regnant (Queens that ruled in their own right) were more likely to start wars and to continue the wars of their predecessors. Notably another study conducted at the University of Chicago found that the link between female leaders and armed conflict continues to the present time.

While the Roman Empire and the Roman Republic are well remembered today, less well known is the Kingdom of Rome. Legend claims that the city of Rome was founded in 753BCE. Romulus killed Remus in an act of fratricide and went on to found the city of Rome, naming it after himself. Romulus then invited colonists to settle in his new city. A problem soon developed though. Most of the colonists were men. The Romans then hatched a plan.

Almost everyone has heard of Cleopatra and Marc Antony. They fought against Octavian for control of what would soon be the Roman Empire after the death of Julius Caesar. They lost to Octavian. Shakespeare wrote a play about it. But there is so much more to the story. Cleopatra was a descendent of Ptolemy I, one of Alexander the Great’s generals. Ptolemy was left in charge of Egypt by Alexander and eventually founded a dynasty that ruled over the land for 275 years.

Thomas was an officer on His Majesty’s ship Britannia. Mary was a horse thief. Thomas was a 19 year old junior officer when in 1794 he proposed to 17 year old Mary. Thomas was serving in the employ of the British East India Company at the time and Mary was under a seven year sentence of transportation to Australia, having arrived in 1792. Thomas had worked in India and other parts of the British Empire before coming to Australia. Transportation (the criminal sentence) is an interesting topic.

Suffrage, or the right to vote, is an important right in any democracy. Societies routinely exclude some sectors of the community from voting and this is entirely consistent with international norms. Normally voting in a democracy is open to citizens that have reached the age of majority. In many countries today that is 18 years. The rules vary by country, and even subnational jurisdiction.

Today is January 26 in Australia. In 1788 the First Fleet arrived in Botany Bay, establishing the first permanent European settlement on the continent of Australia. At the time it was generally called New Holland by Europeans as the western portion of the continent had been explored by the Dutch more than a century earlier. There might have even been earlier explorers. There are unsubstantiated claims of very early Portuguese exploration.

It is extraordinary that she has evaded detection for so long.

The Internet never forgets, or so the saying goes. Actually it forgets all the time. We’re constantly losing important information from the Internet. The loss of the Deja News archives was infamous. In the 1990s Deja had an enormous repository of online discussions from Usenet, arguably an early form of social media. And then Deja went out of business and their archive disappeared. It was a blow to many as the archive had been a very useful reference tool for areas as distinct as IT and history.
