Pope Francis was a historic figure. He was the first Jesuit pope and the first from the Americas or the Southern Hemisphere. He was the first pope to take the name Francis, a nod to St. Francis of Assisi, a mendicant who espoused the ideal of poverty and service to people. (He was also the patron saint of the environment, animals, and birds.) Francis had considerable charm and humility, two qualities that the Catholic Church needed in the wake of his imperious predecessor, Pope Benedict.

by Robert Bryce 04/20/2025 We have lived in Austin for 40 years. And for nearly all of that time, Lorin and I have subscribed to the New York Times. For decades, we took the paper version. When that got too pricey, we switched to the digital-only subscription. Last week, we got a notice of a price increase. Instead of paying $18 monthly, the Times wants us to pay $33!That’s the last straw. I love newspapers and the smell of newsprint. I grew up with newspapers.

by Robert Bryce 04/10/2025 The late economist Milton Friedman famously declared that “nothing is so permanent as a temporary government program.”Friedman’s line comes to mind because a lobbying frenzy is underway in Washington, DC. Some of the city’s most powerful special interests are working to prevent a repeal or reduction of the lavish energy-related tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act. No lobby group is working harder than the American Clean Power Association.

New York’s headlong push for an all-renewable electric grid is running out of gas. [emphasis, links added]Or, to be more accurate, it’s colliding with New Yorkers who refuse to allow their farms, forests, and neighborhoods to be paved with oceans of solar panels and planted with forests of 600-foot-high wind turbines.

California’s energy & power prices are skyrocketing. Except for HI, CA now has the highest residential electricity prices in the US. CA’s gasoline prices are soaring because oil companies are shuttering their refineries. This will hurt @CAgovernor when he runs for president in https://t.co/apfoWIL71K

Yesterday, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum ordered a halt to construction on the 810-MW Empire Wind project, saying the Biden administration approved the permit “without sufficient analysis or consultation among the relevant agencies.” Indeed, it’s clear DOI rushed the offshore https://t.co/txsWAehqi0
