    On March 12, 1982, I drove from my Irmo apartment toward downtown Columbia on the first day working as a photographer for South Carolina Wildlife Department. Nearing downtown on I-126, I tapped my brakes to slow down for a fog bank forming over the Broad River Bridge. A thick fog covered just the bridge and nowhere else. I’d never seen a situation where fog covered an isolated area with such intensity.

    As visitors cross the bridge connecting the mainland to Folly Beach, the island’s entrance sign welcomes them to the Edge of America. In my mind, Folly Beach is the Edge of Heaven. October is the best month to visit — both the crowds and temperatures are down, and the weather is perfect to explore the island. The island’s laid back attitude calms our hectic lives and creates space for enjoying family, nature, seafood, and nearby historic Charleston.
