Late on Sunday in Washington, US president Joe Biden decided to abandon almost three years of risk-averse American policy in Ukraine, by finally gifting Kyiv permission to launch long-range, US-supplied missiles to strike targets inside Russia. The relief in Ukraine is palpable − having long-courted the US to allow such a policy, the talk is now just how quickly this newly lifted restriction can achieve some sort of tactical breakthrough. The reality, however, is far more depressing.

North Korean soldiers march in a parade Credit: Ng Han Guan/AP It is no coincidence that the moment the collective West takes its eyes off the war in Ukraine, other international actors have stepped in. Earlier this month, at the exact same time that President Zelensky unveiled his Victory Plan to a preoccupied Washington, a fragmented Brussels, and an increasingly disinterested London, South Korean and now US intelligence confirmed that the first of up to 12,000 North Korean soldiers had...

Yahya Sinwar, Hamas military commander and the architect of the worst atrocity conducted against Jews since the Holocaust, may have been killed by Israel. The reason he said was simple; Israelis have been suffering under daily Hezbollah rocket barrages for almost a year now, and seemingly not many people outside of Israel neither know nor care. One recurring...

It won’t have escaped even the most casual observer that Russian tyrant Vladamir Putin is having a disastrous summer. The highly successful Ukrainian incursion into the Russian territory of Kursk has cast doubt on his ability to maintain the control which is essential to his grip on power.

“F-16s bring just and lasting peace closer.”So declared Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier this year. As capable as the airframe is, the worry is that this is simply another case of too little, too late, to help achieve that lasting peace. This week Ukraine received the first batch of F-16s, rumoured to be as low in number as only six airframes initially, with more to follow.

The government has launched a 'root and branch' defence review Credit: Henry Nicholls /AFP As the election campaign is now all but a distant memory for Sir Keir Starmer, the practical task of governance has set firmly in, and with it urgent challenges which in opposition one never has to address. None are more urgent to the UK right now than the state of our Armed Forces, after over a decade of piecemeal cuts have left our military with significant and glaring gaps in capabilities,...
