A centenary Mass filled Epiphany Catholic Church on May 18 withreverence, joy, singing and standing room only. Led by Bishop Roy Edward Campbell Jr. of the Washington Diocese, the Mass included six concelebrants — and was followed by a Parish Feast and social gathering that continued the joyous milestone with fellowship and food and drink. Of course, there was birthday cake or two.

Georgetown is truly becoming the land of the rising sushi. There are Kyojin Sushi, Two Nine, Blue Fin, Susheria, Mai Thai, Khin’s Sushi, Georgetown Sushi and Poke. Now, let’s welcome two more this week. Sushi Chef Yoshi Ota will open Sushi Gaku at 1338 Wisconsin Ave. NW in the former basement space of the Donahue on May 21. “I am so honored to join this historical area in Washington and am excited to introduce my Sushi dishes, which I have dedicated my life to cooking for 40 years,” Ota tells us.

This season’s Concert in the Park by the Citizens Association of Georgetown returned to Rose Park on late Sunday afternoon, May 18. An estimated crowd of 400 people — children, dads, moms, grandparents and others — enjoyed singing and dancing to Stacy’s Dad, 90s cover band and sampling the fare of food stations, whether pizza, popcorn, popsicles or Alejandro’s tacos. Even, the police showed up. Along with other groups’ goodies, CAG gave away over 300 bubble wands.

Georgetown residents came out in droves to celebrate community and honor Elizabeth Miller at the Georgetown Village Spring Gala, held at the penthouse of Nancy Taylor Bubes and Alan Bubes on May 8. Despite beginning with rain, the day cleared beautifully — just in time to shine on the honoree and her guests. A devoted advocate of Georgetown, Miller has been a tireless supporter of Georgetown Village.

Epiphany Catholic Church is celebrating 100 years. The parish was founded in 1923, when — due to the bigotry and segregation of the times — about 300 Black parishioner families left Holy Trinity Catholic Church to form their own community. Two years later, the church at 2712 Dumbarton St. NW was canonically established and constructed, featuring a stained-glass window depicting the Epiphany.
