Coming away from this show, the first adjective I thought of that best described Dean Wareham’s expertly crafted songwriting and guitar playing was mannered. On further reflection, that doesn’t really tell the whole story. Meticulous in approach, sure, but ‘mannered’ is a bit of a backhanded compliment. It’s not like Wareham’s doing scissor kicks and knocking over amps on stage, but there’s a steely backbone to the songs along with some bite to his playing.
