For the second consecutive year, The Courier Journal and reporter Stephanie Kuzydym will receive the American Legion Fourth Estate Award. The Legion recognized "Silence & Secrets," an investigation by Kuzydym that exposed the prevalence of child sexual misconduct by Kentucky middle- and high-school coaches. The award, presented annually by the American Legion, goes to outstanding achievement in the field of journalism. There is one national winner for print journalism and one for broadcast.

The Courier Journal's three-part series from watchdog reporter Josh Wood took many months to put together. It included multiple visits to Kentucky's Christian County, hours and hours of courtroom video reviews, numerous public records requests and many interviews, including those done while individuals were serving out jail sentences. The series focuses on questionable behavior that can sprout in a small community when few are watching.

Now, 20 Kentuckians have died, Beshear said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. Rob ByersLouisville Courier JournalAn Oldham County firefighter died Saturday afternoon after he was taken to the hospital from the scene of a fire. Thomas Petschke Jr., 53, died after responding to the fire at 2901 North Buckeye Lane in Goshen, according to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office. The Ballardsville firefighter was taken to Norton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:53 p.m. Saturday.

The investigative project from reporter Stephanie Kuzydym bested finalists from the San Francisco Chronicle and collaborations from ProPublica/Capitol Forum and Scientific American/Salt Lake Tribune to capture the award.
