For nearly 30 years, I have confidently helped patients navigate the IOL selection process for both cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange. Like all surgeons, I consider several factors, including patients’ ocular anatomy, age, occupation, lifestyle needs and expectations, and I make the recommendation I feel is best for them. I often found myself wondering, however, if selecting a lens for my own eyes would be more challenging.

New ramen restaurant in Union Market district donates to Gallaudet

Jinya Ramen Bar celebrated its opening in the Union Market district by donating $1 to Gallaudet University for every edamame dish and lycheetini beverage purchased between October 11 and November 11. Edamame is a dish with immature soybeans, still in their pods. It is served boiled or steamed. Lycheetini is a martini prepared with lychee juice.

James Earl Carter, Jr., the 37th President of the United States, became 100 years old on October 1. He is the longest living former President. Just last week, he also became the oldest person to be nominated for a Grammy Award. This nomination, in the Best Spoken Word Album category, was his tenth. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Carter signed all Gallaudet diplomas awarded between 1977 and 1980.
Women’s volleyball one win away from the United East Conference championship

The Gallaudet University women’s volleyball team won its quarterfinal and semifinal matches in the United East Conference tournament. With a win tomorrow against second-seeded Lancaster Bible College, they will repeat as conference champions and earn an automatic bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III tournament later this month. Gallaudet was 27-4 during the regular season, and was 10-0 in conference play.
Election 2024: Voter mobilization and education efforts a success

The 2024 U.S. Presidential election is history. Our students voted in large numbers, according to student pledges, thanks to the voter registration campaigns conducted earlier this semester. On Tuesday evening, November 5, SignVote and the Office of Student Engagement and Leadership hosted a watch party. Over 350 people attended, and Inside Higher Education published two online stories about the event.

Dr. Danielle Previ, G-’15 & PhD ’18, of the Gallaudet Psychology Clinic was the keynote presenter at the National Conference on Autism in Deaf Education, held October 17-19 at the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, Connecticut. Dr. Previ’s presentation, titled “Deaf on the Spectrum,” set the stage for the three-day conference, which included professional, consumer, and family perspectives. ASD partnered with Deaf Autism America to host this first-ever conference.
It’s the law: D.C. theaters must provide open-captioned films

The District of Columbia now requires movie theaters with three or more screens to provide open-captioned showings. This new law was passed by the Council of the District of Columbia in June, and is the result of years of advocacy by the District of Columbia Association of the Deaf and other allies. It became effective the week of October 18. Compliance will be monitored by the District’s Office of Human Rights. Watch The Daily Moth’s interview with proponents of the new captioning law.
