The Iron Dome shield vision of US President Donald Trump, intended to intercept and destroy incoming missiles and other malicious aerial objects, seems much like a previous dotty one advanced by President Ronald Reagan, known rather blandly as the Strategic Defense Initiative.

Those fundamentalisms remain strong across the world, requiring vigilance from those who embrace political pluralism and celebrate human diversity. But one other fundamentalism today, common on the left and right, is even more dangerous: technological fundamentalism.

Smart people sometimes say not-so-smart things about freedom of speech. Let's start with Elon Musk, the boss at Tesla and SpaceX, and his often-quoted declaration that he is a "free-speech absolutist." Whatever one thinks about Musk, he seems to be a smart person. But that's a silly statement. After he bought Twitter and then banished from the platform various people whose speech he didn't like, critics labeled Musk a hypocrite.

I was politicized and radicalized fairly late in life, beginning at the age of 30 at the end of the 1980s, when I embraced left politics and radical feminism at the same time. Despite tensions between the two philosophies, I remain committed to both. Back to the ‘80s: Until then, I had been a fairly conventional American liberal, albeit weighed down by considerable cynicism that was likely a product of the post-Watergate/Vietnam era, a newspaper journalism career, and my quirky personality.
