For hundreds of years, queer history has been hidden in plain sight, its artists casting their gazes in a myriad of ways, encoded in our constructs of beauty, desire, status, and wealth. Photography’s arrival in 1839 signalled a remarkable shift, placing the power of image-making in the hands of the people rather than the establishment. For those driven to create, visibility quickly became an act of resistance against misrepresentation, marginalisation, and erasure.

Photo: Faye Frazer/@fayefrazerrr In 2015, a resplendent, smoky version of Skepta’s ‘Bad Boy’ emerged, made by a young producer — Newham’s own KwolleM — on a laptop bought by his parents to help him complete his accounting degree. “Oi, this is the most on-time I’ve ever been to a Zoom, you know,” Capo Lee tells DJ Mag on a torrentially wet, stormy Monday afternoon, wrapped in a black puffer jacket and matching baseball cap, a wry smile on his face. He’s just released ‘POUND & DOLLA’ with masked producer bullet tooth — an excellent seven-track mixtape which reimagines UK garage’s transition to grime over a series of bassy, nocturnal productions.
