1 INTRODUCTION Operational meteorologists have an ever-increasing volume of data to analyse when producing their forecasts, which has come about through several technical and scientific advances in numerical weather prediction (NWP) (Alley et al., 2019). These advances include increasing use of regional kilometre-scale convection-permitting ensembles for short-range prediction—for example, Hagelin et al. (2017), Raynaud and Bouttier (2017) and Klasa et al. (2018).
