When a pair of Upper East Side residents purchased an 8,000-square-foot home in Bedford Hills, New York, in 2017, they intended to use the space as a weekend retreat. The nearly 200-year-old property had been “badly neglected” and in need of basic plumbing and electrical upgrades right away, says Amanda Offit, who owns the home with her husband. In fact, it wasn’t until December 2019 that they could comfortably stay there overnight.
