Veteran Employment Outcomes UpdateThe U.S. Census Bureau is set to release an expanded version of Veteran Employment Outcomes (VEO). The updated experimental data product will now include earnings and employment outcomes for veterans honorably discharged between 2002 and 2021 as well as from additional branches of the Armed Services. These data show important differences across military rank and occupation, regardless of the branch of service.

This year marks a momentous anniversary for us at the U.S. Census Bureau: 30 years of census.gov. In 1994, just five years after the advent of the World Wide Web, we launched census.gov and became one of the first government agencies to have a public website. Since its inception, census.gov has had many different looks and an expanding array of functionalities.

NOVEMBER 5, 2024 — The U.S. Census Bureau and the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) are set to co-host the first Collaborative Academic Symposium “Puerto Rico en Datos” (Translation: Puerto Rico in Data) in Carolina, Puerto Rico, on Friday, November 15 starting at 8 a.m. AST. The event is a joint effort as part of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) between the Census Bureau and UPR signed last year by Census Bureau Director Robert Santos and UPR President Dr. Luis Ferrao.

Population Pyramid for Detailed Hispanic Origin GroupsThe U.S. Census Bureau is set to release a new data visualization – How do Hispanic or Latino Groups in the United States Compare? This interactive population pyramid uses 2000, 2010, and 2020 census data to allow users to view changes in regional and detailed Hispanic or Latino groups such as Mexican, Puerto Rican, Salvadoran and Colombian over time. Users can also directly compare groups to view differences in age and sex distributions.

Here’s an insight to think about that emerged from my travel engagements: Public service can take many forms. We at the U.S. Census Bureau embrace our public service mission to provide quality data on our nation’s people, places and economy by collecting and publishing statistical data. But collecting, processing and then releasing statistical data followed by a ‘mic drop’ is never enough.

Happy Pride Month, everyone! In June our nation celebrates the accomplishments and resilience of our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) community. To further that celebration, I want to talk about how we at the U.S. Census Bureau are expanding our knowledge on measuring sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). The LGBTQIA+ population is a growing and a beautifully diversifying part of our American landscape.

NebraskaIn Nebraska, I engaged with community leaders from groups including the New Americans Task Force, the Nebraska Commission on Latino Americans, the Urban League of Nebraska, the Nebraska Urban Indian Health Coalition, and Bryan Health. Our discussions about how the Census Bureau can meet the data needs of these organizations and the communities they serve were illuminating, and I look forward to future collaborations with them.

On March 28, the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) published the results of its review of Statistical Policy Directive No. 15 (SPD 15) and issued updated standards for collecting and reporting race and ethnicity data across federal agencies, including the U.S. Census Bureau. These standards were last revised over a quarter century ago. Given the evolution of our nation over the past two decades, this announcement is well received.
