Thank you for publishing the 9 or 10 "Supporting Candidates" letters in the Aug. 27, 2024, Free Press. Many of us noticed that they all seemed to support a candidate who understands firsthand the challenges, watches out for pocketbooks while providing essential services, has met or ignored the writer several times, will hit the ground running and, most importantly, shares the writer's views. ┬áNow fully informed, I am prepared to vote.

Has this happened to you? I tried to pay a company the monthly rental fee on my oxygen machine. The paper bill said $28.43. All went well until I came to the CVC part of the form. It would not let me type in my prove-that-it’s-you secret number. The site knew my credit card from last month, so it was in their system. I took it on from all sides. I finally called their help number and, after only a few tries, was connected with a very patient woman with a foreign accent who tried to help me.

Captain Freddy’s house has been on the market for 18 hours. The asking price of $399,000 is 80 times more than the $5,000 I paid for it in 1966. Captain Freddy was a good neighbor. I have many fond memories and stories about him. When he quit going to sea, he became a carpenter. When I was small, I went next door and watched him build a garage. Back then the old people had a different way of saying things.

In 1949, I was in high school. That was 75 years ago, and 75 years before 1949 was 1874. When I was in high school, I could have asked many of my neighbors to tell me what they did for work or fun from the 1860s right up through the Depression. I’d also like to know who was living in all the houses in my neighborhood back in those days and who built them. I wish some of them had written about these things. So writing about what I did and saw as a kid is now a moral obligation.

How many things would you do differently if you knew back then what you know now? If I were starting over, any house I built or was buying would delight folks who need walkers or wheelchairs. When you are 80, you realize that there is only a blink of time between high school and the age that things stop working. Like all afflictions, you never know if or when it is going to happen.

You’ve heard of Maine’s Lost Kitchen, where dinner per person could come to $265. The way I heard it, you could only get a reservation by sending them a postcard. The restaurant gets around 20,000 postcards, and only a few of them are selected. Were I to send in a postcard, I could boast that my wife Marsha and I had gambled on having a $500 dining experience most people can only dream of. With my luck, I’d probably get chosen. If I want an exotic meal, I’ll eat at home.

Although Marsha and I no longer have the antiquated land line with outlets on the walls, we have not been able to master the modern flat thing. We have, however, moved up to a computer phone that runs through the internet cable. So when a tree drops on the cable somewhere up the line, we have no phone. Another small disadvantage is that only one person can talk at a time. This should not be a problem because many people can converse without both feeling the need to talk at the same time.
