UCF has continuously been recognized as a top supplier of graduates to the aerospace and defense industries, and two UCF professors plan to solidify that reputation through a new national consortium. Professors Subith Vasu and Jayanta Kapat are leading a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to establish a consortium that will support students from underrepresented communities who are interested in earning engineering degrees.

A team of researchers led by University of Central Florida Pegasus Professor of Physics Enrique Del Barco is working on a new project that could change the future of electronics, making them faster and more energy efficient. The work is funded by a new $1.3 million award from the W.M. A group of 12 UCF students and faculty enriched their understanding of semiconductor manufacturing through the Semiconductor Manufacturing and Advances in Recent Technologies (SMART) workshop that took place in July. The two-week program, sponsored by Intel and hosted by UCF’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, exposed students and local educators to the field of semiconductor manufacturing through a series of comprehensive and hands-on experiences.

For the first time, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide ices have been observed in the far reaches of our solar system on trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs). A research team, led by University of Central Florida and Florida Space Institute (FSI) planetary scientists Mário Nascimento De Prá and Noemí Pinilla-Alonso, made the findings by using infrared spectral capabilities of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to analyze the chemical composition of 59 trans-Neptunian objects and Centaurs.
