    I think most people, even those among us who may disagree strongly with the present administration in Washington, D.C., can applaud it for pursuing at least this one goal. That is, cutting the federal budget. It has to be done. Indeed, it has needed to be done for many, many years and through many administrations on both sides of the aisle. Great so far.

    Here is a selection of the questions the Auburn City Council put to Lisa Stirgus and the other candidates for the seat vacated by Larry Brown, followed by answers received before the council adjourned to an executive session. Councilmembers did not know the candidates’ names or any personal information about them until they returned from the session. All they knew were numbers that had been randomly added to their applications by City Clerk Shawn Campbell.

    On April 14, the Auburn City Council appointed Lisa Stirgus to complete the eight months left of former councilmember Larry Brown’s term. Stirgus will fill the position until the last council meeting in December after voters in the November election have chosen a councilmember to fill a full-four year term. Brown resigned on Feb. 16 for medical reasons. Seven Auburn residents made the final cut from an original field of 44, but one of them was not present in council chambers at Monday’s meeting.

    April 12 is always a dark day for my family. For me, Saturday will be freighted with a heavy sense of disbelief — it will be the 50th anniversary of my brother Jim’s death. Half a century. No. Can’t be true. But it is. I can do the math: I was 13 then, I am 63 now. Still, internally, it’s hard to process. To sober me to this, the hardest of hard facts, I often catch myself doing a bit of simple math.
