The NEA told the Sitka Fine Arts Camp that its project no longer “aligned with the priorities of the President,” which include celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and “fostering AI competency.” The camp serves roughly 800 students from 43 communities around Alaska each summer. It has received NEA funding almost every year since 2004.

A $700 increase in the base student allowance for schools was tucked into a bill containing some education policy reforms, including guidelines around the use of cell phones. A large majority of both the Alaska House and Senate passed the bill, but the governor has vetoed two previous efforts to increase funding for K-12 education. Tim Fulton developed TISABAS (“Tim Saves Backs”) in his home workshop in Sitka in 2018. During his 38-years in the airline industry, Fulton prototyped a variety of rollers and belts to safely move heavy items like fish boxes inside of aircraft. He sold his first two production models to Malaysian Airlines, and steadily built an overseas market for the device.

Following the appointment of Blossom Twitchell and Andrew Hames to a pair of vacant seats, the Sitka School Board reorganized: Amy Morrison was selected as board president; Eric Van Cise is the vice-president; and Paul Rioux is the clerk.

The Sitka School Board has appointed Blossom Twitchell to a vacant seat on the board on one ballot. Andrew Hames was appointed to the second seat on the third ballot. Both will serve until the municipal election on October 6.
