Sen. Bert Stedman explains the benefits of merging Mt. Edgecumbe High School with the list used to maintain schools in the state’s Regional Education Attendance Areas (REAA’s). The move would allow maintenance at Mt. Edgecumbe — or even the construction of student and faculty housing — to be evaluated against the capital requests of schools, rather than against the needs of all state facilities. “I think the State of Alaska could do better for the kids at Edgecumbe,” said Stedman.

“I did it for the animals,” says Burgess Bauder of his fifty-one year veterinary practice. “I didn’t do it for the people.” While Burgess didn’t charge for his services, clients usually reimbursed him (at wholesale rates) for costly medications or anesthetics. This is not to say he didn’t try to be a regular paid veterinarian at the beginning.

Ferguson says the HCTC will return to Sitka on alternate years. She hopes to take the annual event to places like Juneau, Ketchikan, and Anchorage in the future. Alaska has scenery and wildlife – staggering amounts of both, in fact. But over the years it became clear to Camille Ferguson that visitors to the state were interested in something more than good views. “We’re not a bygone people,” said Ferguson, the Economic Development Director of the Sitka Tribe of Alaska.

Following the appointment of Blossom Twitchell and Andrew Hames to a pair of vacant seats, the Sitka School Board reorganized: Amy Morrison was selected as board president; Eric Van Cise is the vice-president; and Paul Rioux is the clerk.

The Sitka School Board has appointed Blossom Twitchell to a vacant seat on the board on one ballot. Andrew Hames was appointed to the second seat on the third ballot. Both will serve until the municipal election on October 6.
