Baseball coaches have been asking for it and now they’re really going to get it. A new era of LHSAA baseball begins Thursday best-of-three finals series at McMurry Park in Sulphur. Four Baton Rouge area teams are part of the latest baseball transition. The format is correctly lauded as the best way to determine the top teams in the top three select/nonselect divisions. It will be interesting to see what this format looks like in real time.

When a coach steps away from a job, it can be emotional. What Matt Shelton is moving toward balances the ledger. The 44-year-old Shelton is the next athletic director at Catholic High. Shelton has been the Bears’ offensive line coach for six seasons and served as an assistant to current AD Ben DiPalma. “I got my masters in sports management a few years ago. I’ve learned a lot from Ben and JP (Kelly) and Pete Boudreaux (previous ADs) since I’ve been here," Shelton said.

Since more people are growing their own vegetables , the term “home grown” takes on new meaning. Family Christian Academy’s Jon Bolton has his own spin. Instead of beans or brussels sprouts, the FCA coach has grown baseball players. “A lot of these kids were in fourth and fifth grade when I came here,” Bolton said. “So, we started an elementary school program six years ago. And they started playing then. They’ve grown up in it and it's been fun to watch. “Some of them weren’t even 10 years old.
