LSU fans got a reminder of what a dominant player Ashlee Ducote was when she was honored during a softball alumni weekend this spring. The former Alexandria Senior High star was part of a 1997 Tiger team that resurrected the sport at LSU. Ducote was a two-time first-team All-America selection and the SEC Player of the Year in 2000. A few weeks later, Ducote and her Parkview Baptist team have another softball resurrection project in the works.

Like intrigue? How about rivalries and quests for postseason glory? If you do, this is your kind of high school sports week. The LHSAA’s baseball and softball playoffs got off to a fast start over the past three days. Starting Tuesday, those playoffs go literally all in with teams that garnered opening-round byes entering the mix. Most softball teams play their regional round on Tuesday. Meanwhile, baseball teams in Divisions I-III continue their best-of-three games series next weekend.

I never know what to expect when I approach a coach after a lopsided loss. Some are angry. Others are sad or disappointed. Tara coach Donald Langford was none of those things after his 16th-seeded Trojans lost 19-2 in four innings to No. 17 Lake Charles College Prep Friday afternoon. “We competed … we battled back and scored two runs after their big inning,” Langford said. “We made mistakes, but when you consider most of kids never played baseball before they got to high school, I am pleased.

A year ago, Dutchtown was the top-seeded team on the LHSAA’s Division I nonselect softball bracket. The Griffins were eliminated in the quarterfinals. Asked whether being a third seed this time around reduces the pressure on her squad, DTHS coach Nancy Ensminger offered a blunt yet accurate assessment. “I’m don't really see that,” Ensminger said. “It is a one-game proposition from here on out. If you win the game in front of you, you move on to the next one, which is a one-game proposition too.
