Throughout Jazz Appreciation Month, I’ve been reminded of why I love this music so deeply. Maybe you, too, can recall when you first fell in love with jazz. On April 15, the Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island announced its 2025 lineup, with more artists expected to be revealed soon. This year, the festival takes place August 1-3. I haven’t been back to the festival in years, but my 2005 visit stands out vividly.

The 27th annual Twin Cities Jazz Festival, formerly known as the Twin Cities Hot Summer Jazz Festival, is scheduled to take place June 20-21 in Mears Park, located in Lowertown St. Paul. As one of the largest jazz festivals in the Midwest, the event is free and open to the public, offering a celebration of jazz music and culture.

The power of music to bring us together was on full display January 28, 2025 at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis when the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) with trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis performed in front of a full and enthusiastic audience. For more than 90-minutes, the greatest big band in the land played music from their Cool School & Hard Bop and Bebop Revolution programs.
