1 INTRODUCTION Ireland has responded to the growing burden of alcohol-related harm by introducing new labelling regulations, which will come into effect in 2026, requiring that alcohol containers display information about the direct link between alcohol and fatal cancers, among other health information.

Abstract Background and Aims There have been few systematic attempts to examine how alcohol-related mortality has changed in Australia, and no studies that have explored cohort effects in alcohol-related mortality. This study uses more than 50 years of data to measure age, period and cohort trends in alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) mortality.

From August 2023, Australian beer, wine, spirits and pre-mixed drinks have to warn of the harms of drinking alcohol while pregnant. But they don’t have to mention the other harms of alcohol for the wider population. Ireland recently signed legislation to introduce tougher alcohol warning labels, to warn about the risks of liver disease and fatal cancers from drinking alcohol. These will be in place from 2026.
